The smiley face was created in 1963 by a freelance designer named Harvey Ball. In the 1970s was commercialized to sell button, mugs and t-shirts. It is very common for people to include a smiley face in an email by pressing a colon followed by a close parenthsis. Smiling is part of a universal language of facial expressions that infers happiness.
